Is a list of related substances from MKM sufficient basis to skip independent testing?

Asked 8 Nov 2025Modified 5 months agoViewed 6.1k times

Concretely: list of related substances · MKM.

I want to decide this in advance so that I am not deciding it under pressure later.

Assume I will follow the plan I write down, so I would like it to be a good one.

What should I decide now, and what should I defer?

The part that matters: the certificate is not the answer to your question; it is a data point that you need to combine with other information to build an answer.

The test date matters because a certificate six months older than the vial is not evidence about your material, it is evidence about what the material was like half a year ago.

Test results from a material supplier are different from independent results in ways that matter for interpretation, even if both are accurate.

Pharmacopoeial standards require method validation steps that research-grade certificates almost never claim to meet, and the absence of that claim is itself information.

Worth noting that none of this is medical advice, and a compound sold for research use carries no regulatory approval in any jurisdiction.

If the certificate does not trace to your vial, it is not evidence about your vial.

The underlying point is that reading a certificate means checking four things before anything else: traceability to your vial, the test date, the analytical method, and the identity of the testing laboratory.

A purity figure to two decimal places with no supporting chromatogram is giving false precision and is a red flag on the same level as spelling errors.

The relevant detail is that a method section that differs markedly from pharmacopoeial standards is either innovative or nonstandard, and distinguishing the two requires expertise.

Be careful not to over-read this — a certificate that is imperfect is not worthless, it is just a starting point for thought rather than an endpoint.

My working rule is that a document without a lot number, a method section and a test date is marketing.

2Do you have the chromatogram for this, or just the summary figure? – pascal_thibault 24 days ago

Ask PeptideStack is a static archive. Posting is closed, but the norms are worth stating: answer the question that was asked, show your working, cite the trial or the certificate, and say plainly where the evidence runs out.

Not medical advice. Research-use-only compounds are not approved for human use.
