98.2 per cent is a statement about area, and the other 1.8 per cent is everything the detector saw and did not assign to your peak. Read it as 98.2 of every 100 units of peak area at whatever wavelength was used, not as 98.2 per cent of the mass in the vial. With the date of analysis attached you can at least see how the figure was produced, which is the difference between a measurement and a claim. What it still does not tell you is content: how many milligrams are actually there.
In practice, understanding purity requires separating the chemistry from the method from the reporting convention, and the three are not independent.
Integration of the shoulder — whether you use perpendicular drop or tangent skim — determines what area gets assigned to the main peak versus the impurity table.
Buffer versus acid in the mobile phase changes the ionisation state of basic and acidic residues, shifting retention and selectivity — same vial, potentially different separation.
Proline conformer interconversion kinetics are well-characterised and the half-life is of the same order as the chromatographic peak width at room temperature.
I would be careful about over-reading a single measurement — treat it as a data point, not as ground truth.
Compare purity within a single laboratory on the same method, never across laboratories.
